Still Life 9 – Sunflower in Glass Vase

Sunflower in Glass Vase by Mourad Darwish centers on a golden bloom against a dark background. Its deep flower center gives definition to the surrounding petals, while a glass vessel holds the stem below. Another bloom rests near the lower left, extending the floral subject into the foreground.

The oil painting’s palette moves through brown, gray, black, and warm gold. Dark passages surround the flower, making its color feel concentrated rather than broadly dispersed. The vase catches smaller changes of light, connecting the stronger upper bloom to the quieter lower part of the composition.

The standing and resting flowers create different gestures. One rises above the vessel; the other brings the viewer’s attention closer to the surface below. Their relationship adds variety to a simple arrangement, while the shadowed setting allows the shapes of petals and stems to remain the principal sources of movement.

The work offers a floral image with a measured, intimate atmosphere. Its appeal lies in the contrast between the flower’s warmth and the depth of the surrounding tones. Sunflower in Glass Vase invites a closer encounter with color and paint handling, giving a familiar bloom a strong presence through the quiet concentration of its setting.
